Working towards a connected, thriving Torbay.

The Torbay area consists of three major towns –  Torquay, Brixham and Paignton, making it the second largest urban area in Devon, with a population of over 135,750 people. It’s a mecca for tourists as the English Riviera, but home to globally significant technology businesses operating in photonics, marine industries (including the fish market and fleet), nano technology and medi-tech.

Our top three aspirations

  • Learn how to collaborate differently within communities (professionals and residents)
  • Develop capability and voice through collaboration and participation; enabling citizens to step into their potential
  • Make sustainable changes to the ecosystem to tackle deep rooted systemic issues within it

Our vision

We want to create a connected Torbay; enabling citizens and professionals to work together as equals to solve deep rooted systemic issues, in a way that develops voice, capability and agency for all involved.

How will we do this?

  • We will develop different relationships between professionals and citizens based on trust, respect and cooperation, recognising they are all part of the community.
  • We will embrace a simple start and enable communities to lead the charge and we will be open to the work emerging
  • We will offer time, space, resources and relevant expertise that supports deep listening, co-creation and action
  • We will recognise when traditional habits creep in and continue to reflect, learn and challenge ourselves to try new things

The core group of Torbay comprises people from across sectors (Statutory and VCSE).

What we’re working on

We have identified three big systemic issues to work on so that we can test new approaches to solving deep-rooted problems as a connected place:

  • Strengthen families and reduce the number of children entering care
  • Address the root causes of food insecurity
  • Financial wellbeing

Get involved

Children, young people and families

Families and young people need to be at the centre, leading on solutions as they identify them; not just listened to, but provided with a vehicle for change. Our plan is to work together, equally, supporting everyone in our community to thrive and step into their potential. We’re inviting groups and organisations working with families and/or young people in the Torbay area to participate in this experimental approach, bringing ideas and working them up further collaboratively.
